# Turn RemNote notes into flashcards with AI

> Read a RemNote document and add Basic, Cloze and multi-line flashcards to it, written in your own wording. Runs from Claude Code, n8n or a script.

You took clean notes on a lecture, and now every definition has to be retyped as "front >> back" before it becomes a card.

Cotlet does it in your own RemNote account with get\_document and create\_flashcards, called by your AI agent, an n8n workflow or a script.

## Can RemNote do this on its own?

RemNote turns typed trigger characters into cards and offers AI Cards, which spends AI credits (checked 17 Oct 2026). Both run inside the app. The official MCP help article lists notes only and does not describe flashcard creation, and it runs locally in the desktop app.

## How you do it in RemNote today

1. Type >> or == after a prompt to create a Basic card, << for a reverse card and <> for a two-way card.
2. Type {{ or highlight text and press { to make a Cloze card; type :: for a Concept card or ;; for a Descriptor card.
3. Type >>> for a multi-line card, and all bullets nested under it become the card items.
4. Or paste text, select it and click AI Cards on the toolbar, then choose the level of detail: High-level summary, Important ideas or Exhaustive detail.
5. Open the Flashcard Home to see the new cards; cards from a fresh import or AI run wait in their own queue until you start learning them.

## How to turn RemNote notes into flashcards with AI

Prompt

```
Read my RemNote document "Krebs cycle" and add a Basic flashcard for each definition and a Cloze card for each list of steps, as new bullets at the end of the document.
```

1. 01
### Read the whole document
get\_document returns the bullets of the document with their nesting, so the agent sees which bullet is a definition and which is a list of steps.
2. 02
### Pick a card type per bullet
A definition becomes a Basic card (>>), a list of steps a multi-line card (>>>), and a sentence with one key term a Cloze card ({{ }}). The agent keeps your wording instead of rewriting it.
3. 03
### Skip what is already a card
Bullets that already carry a card trigger are left alone, so running the job twice does not double the deck.
4. 04
### Write the cards in
create\_flashcards adds the cards as new bullets in the document, using the same trigger characters RemNote documents for text import. It writes only into your own knowledge base, so it does not wait for your OK.
5. 05
### Report counts by type
The agent returns how many cards of each type it added and which bullets it skipped, so you can review them in the Flashcard Home.

### What you get back

Example data

```
Document "Krebs cycle": 14 bullets read
Added 9 cards:
- Basic: 5 (e.g. "Citrate >> first product of the cycle")
- Cloze: 3
- Multi-line: 1 (the eight steps)
Skipped 5 bullets: 2 already cards, 3 headings
```

### Other ways to ask

- Make every definition in my "Contract law" folder a two-way card, but leave the case summaries alone.
- Add a multiple-choice card for each key term in this document, with three wrong answers from the same chapter.
- Every Sunday, find documents I edited this week with no cards and add cards for their definitions.

## What RemNote allows, and what to know first

- RemNote creates a Basic card from >> or ==, a reverse card from <<, a two-way card from <> and a disabled card from >-.
- A Cloze card uses {{ }} around the hidden words, and several clozes in one bullet stay independent of each other.
- Multi-line cards use >>> on the front bullet, and every bullet nested under it becomes a card item.
- Flashcards that come from an import do not appear as due at once; RemNote routes them to a Need to Learn queue.
- AI Cards uses AI credits, and the free plan has 250 AI credits per month; this job writes cards with plain trigger characters instead.

create\_flashcards changes only your own RemNote data and reach no one else, so it runs without asking first.

## Call create\_flashcards from a script

curl

```
curl -X POST https://cotlet.dev/api/v1/remnote/documents/rem_8f21a0/flashcards \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $COTLET_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"cards":[{"type":"basic","front":"Citrate","back":"First product of the Krebs cycle"},{"type":"cloze","text":"The cycle runs in the {{mitochondrial matrix}}"}]}'
```

Example response

```
{
"document_id": "rem_8f21a0",
"cards_added": 2,
"by_type": {
"basic": 1,
"cloze": 1
}
}
```

MCP: add https://cotlet.dev/mcp/v1 with the same key; the call is remnote\_write → create\_flashcards. Example data.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is it safe to connect RemNote to Cotlet?

Yes. You sign in to RemNote yourself, in your own Cloud Browser in the EU, and we never save your password. Your agents only get RemNote once you enable it, every background request is listed, and the browser profile is stored encrypted with AES-256-GCM, the cipher 1Password uses for its vaults. The AI model never sees a login, posts and messages wait for your OK, and Disable for agents cuts access in one click. Independent scanners grade cotlet.dev A+ on Qualys SSL Labs, securityheaders.com and Mozilla Observatory; live results are on https://cotlet.dev/security.

## For AI agents: sign your user up

Is your user asking you to sign them up for Cotlet? You can do it for them, no account or key needed.

1. Read the fields and their allowed values: GET https://cotlet.dev/api/v1/access-requests
2. Ask the user for each value: email, apps, what you will do with them. If they leave the password to you, generate a strong one and show it to them.
3. Show the user what you will send, then POST it as JSON to https://cotlet.dev/api/v1/access-requests.

One call creates the account and sends the access request; we email the user when access is granted.
