Respond to Hipcamp reviews, publicly or in private

Hipcamp reviews show up in bursts, two weeks after a busy weekend, when the review window closes. The critical one about the muddy road deserves a careful public reply, and the five short thank-yous are easy to forget.

Cotlet does it in your own Hipcamp account with list_reviews, get_booking and respond_to_review, called by your AI agent, an n8n workflow or a script.

Can Hipcamp do this on its own?

Hipcamp has no API for reviews (checked 12 Oct 2026). Hosts respond by hand from the review email or the public Property page; the Hipcamp app does not offer it. Hipcamp removes a review only under its review policy, for example inaccurate facts with proof, bias or vulgar language, so a reply is often the only tool a host has.

By hand

How you do it in Hipcamp today

  1. Open your Property page and click View Property in the top right to open the public Property page while logged in as the host.
  2. Scroll down to Reviews, click Show all reviews and find the reviews without a reply; Hipcamp does not offer this tool in the app.
  3. Click Respond to review and choose in the pop-up whether the response goes out publicly under the review or as a private message to the camper.
  4. For a review that also came with a private comment, the review email has Reply publicly and private reply links at the bottom.
  5. Do this after every review window closes. A negative review left without a public answer stays on the Property page as the only side of the story.

How to respond to Hipcamp reviews, publicly or in private

Prompt

Every Monday, list Hipcamp reviews from the last 14 days that I have not answered. Draft a private thank-you for short positive ones and a public reply for anything that mentions a problem, and show me the drafts first.
  1. 01

    Find what is unanswered

The agent lists reviews without a response, filtered to the last few weeks so a review from last season does not get a late thank-you that looks automated.

  2. 02

Sort by what the camper said

A review that recommends you and says nothing new gets a private thank-you, as Hipcamp itself suggests. A review that names a problem, or does not recommend the site, gets a public reply draft.

  3. 03

    Check the facts before replying

For a critical review the agent reads the booking: site, dates, group size. If the camper says "no water" and your notes show the pump was off that week for repairs, the draft says so plainly instead of arguing.

  4. 04

Keep the tone in your voice

Drafts thank the camper by first name, answer the specific point, say what changed if something did, and leave out offers and mailing lists. Public replies stay under four sentences.

  5. 05

    Post only after your OK

Every response appears under your name, so each draft waits for approval. Reviews you want removed instead are listed with the policy reason that might apply, for you to raise with Hipcamp Support.

What you get back

Example data

Reviews without a response, last 14 days: 6
Private thank-you drafted (4): Maya R., Leo G., Ana T., Ruth D.
Public reply drafted (1): Chris D., Creekside, "road was muddy after rain". Draft: "Thanks, Chris. The lane floods after heavy rain; we have added gravel and a note in the arrival guide."
For you (1): Sam W. says the site was "a dump". No proof against it in your notes; a public reply is suggested over a removal request.

Other ways to ask

  • Answer only Hipcamp reviews that do not recommend us, publicly, and show me each draft.
  • Send a private thank-you to every camper who recommended us this month.
  • List all Hipcamp reviews that mention the road or parking, so I can fix the arrival guide.

Before you automate it

What Hipcamp allows, and what to know first

  • Hipcampers and hosts have 14 days after a trip to leave reviews; Hipcamp publishes both at once if both write, or publishes a single review when the window closes.
  • Only people who booked through Hipcamp can review a Hipcamp site, and both the trip organizer and guests who accepted the trip invite may leave one.
  • Once a Hipcamp review is published, changing it requires both the host and the Hipcamper to agree on the edit.
  • Hipcamp removes a review it finds inaccurate only with photographic proof or other evidence; opinions are not removed, and Hipcamp suggests a public reply instead.
  • Star Host on Hipcamp needs a Recommend Rate of at least 95% and at least 5 positive recommends, so each review that does not recommend you matters more on a small listing.

respond_to_review asks for your OK by default. To run it weekly without you, switch confirmation off for that tool in your dashboard.
