Create a series of Meetup events from an agenda

The speaker list for next season is settled in a spreadsheet, and every talk needs its own Meetup event with its own title and abstract. Meetup's repeat option would give you six identical events, so you build them one by one in the event form.

Cotlet does it in your own Meetup account with list_events, get_event, create_event and announce_event, called by your AI agent, an n8n workflow or a script.

Official options

Can Meetup do this on its own?

Meetup's Create event menu offers Copy a past event, Generate event with AI and a Repeat event option that schedules weekly, every-two-weeks or monthly events up to a required end date (help center checked 12 Oct 2026). Repeating events are identical aside from their date, so a season with a different talk each week still means one form per event. The free Meetup Starter plan has no recurring events at all. Meetup's GraphQL API can create events, but only for Meetup Pro subscribers (checked 11 Oct 2026).

By hand

How you do it in Meetup today

  1. On the Meetup group homepage, click Create event and choose Copy a past event, or Create a new event to start from an empty event scheduler form.
  2. In the Meetup event form, type a title under 80 characters, the date and time, the description with the talk abstract, and pick the venue under Location.
  3. Under Optional settings in the Meetup form, set the Attendee limit again and decide whether guests are allowed.
  4. Click Publish, or save the event as a draft to finish later, then choose Announce it now or Do it later on the published event.
  5. Repeat the whole form for every talk. A copied Meetup event keeps the old title until you change it, and the "Just published" email can carry that old name.

With an agent

How to create a series of Meetup events from an agenda

Prompt

Here are the talks for the next six Tuesdays. Create one Meetup event per talk, same venue and limit as last Python Night, keep them as drafts and show me the list.
  1. 01

Take the last event as the template

The agent finds your most recent past event with list_events, reads it with get_event and keeps what stays the same each time: venue, duration and attendee limit. Anything the agenda gives per talk, such as title, speaker and abstract, replaces the template field. A one-off repeat, like next month's Python Night, works the same way: the old event's details plus the new date and title go into a fresh create_event draft.

  2. 02

    Check the calendar before adding

list_events with upcoming and draft shows what is already scheduled. A date that already has an event in your group is skipped and reported, so a rerun of the same agenda does not create doubles.

  3. 03

    Fit Meetup's rules before saving

Titles longer than 80 characters are shortened and shown to you. On a Starter group the agent stops after the second in-person event of a calendar month and keeps the attendee limit at 10, then tells you which talks did not fit.

  4. 04

    Save drafts, one per talk

create_event runs once per agenda line with publish left off. Nothing is visible to members until you read the drafts in Meetup or in the agent's summary and say go.

  5. 05

Announce with gaps, only on request

After your OK, the agent publishes and calls announce_event for one event at a time, waiting at least 15 minutes between announcements, which is the spacing Meetup recommends for several upcoming events.

What you get back

Example data

6 drafts created in Tech Founders Berlin, venue Co-Work Mitte, limit 40, 19:00 to 21:00.
3 Nov: Intro to SQL (Dana K.)
10 Nov: Postgres indexing in practice (Mo R.)
17 Nov: skipped, "Founders Pub Night" is already on that date.
24 Nov: Testing data pipelines (Ana L.)
1 Dec: dbt for small teams (title cut from 92 to 79 characters)
8 Dec: Year in review lightning talks
Nothing announced. Say "announce the November ones" to send them 15 minutes apart.

Other ways to ask

  • Copy last month's Python Night to the second Thursday of November at 19:00 with the title Python Night #24 and keep it as a draft.
  • Read the agenda in this Google Doc and draft the spring season of book club events, every other Wednesday, with the book title as the event name.
  • Publish and announce all drafts for November, oldest first, with a quarter of an hour between each.
  • Create the online version of each talk too, with the Zoom link from last time and no attendee limit.

Before you automate it

What Meetup allows, and what to know first

  • Meetup repeating events copy every detail except the date, and a monthly or two-week series stays on the weekday of the first event.
  • Meetup requires an end date for every repeating event and sets it six months after the first event unless you pick another date.
  • Meetup Starter, the free plan for first-time organizers, allows 2 in-person events per calendar month with up to 10 attendees each, and leaves out recurring and online events.
  • Meetup recommends at least 15 minutes between announcements when several events go out, and hides the Announce button once an event is less than seven days away.
  • Meetup sends its own reminders to members 6 days and 1 day before an event, but skips them when an announcement went out in the previous 24 hours.

create_event and announce_event ask for your OK by default. To run it on a schedule without you, switch confirmation off for those tools in your dashboard.

Frequently asked questions

Why not use Meetup's Repeat event option?

Use it when every date is the same event. Meetup gives every event in a series the same details aside from the date, so a season of different talks fits better as separate events.
