Start BambooHR onboarding tasks for a new hire
A new hire is in BambooHR and starts on Monday, but the IT setup and manager tasks only exist once someone opens the profile, imports the task lists and checks who owns each task.
Cotlet does it in your own BambooHR account with find_employee, list_task_lists, add_task_lists and list_onboarding_tasks, called by your AI agent, an n8n workflow or a script.
Hosted · nothing to install or maintain
Can BambooHR do this on its own?
BambooHR's own tools cover the clicks but not code (checked 16 Oct 2026). The REST API and the beta MCP server have no endpoint or tool for onboarding tasks: the new hire packet endpoints return a packet without sections, tasks or questions. The Zapier app lists no onboarding trigger or action. Nothing reads or imports task lists from outside BambooHR.
How you do it in BambooHR today
- An admin opens the new hire's profile and goes to the Onboarding tab, or opens the New Hire Packet.
- The admin clicks Add Task List(s), which opens a window with every task list and task from the Onboarding settings.
- BambooHR preselects each task whose filters include this employee; the admin checks or unchecks tasks to fit the person.
- Save Tasks imports the selection, and the admin then adjusts due dates and assignees where the defaults are wrong.
- The admin tracks status on the Onboarding tab, because assignees only get automatic reminders and nobody gets a list of tasks nobody owns.
How to start BambooHR onboarding tasks for a new hire
Find employees in BambooHR who start in the next 7 days and have no onboarding tasks yet. Add the IT setup and Manager tasks lists, and tell me which tasks have no assignee. - 01
Find who starts soon
Your agent looks up the employees whose hire date falls in your window, using find_employee, and skips anyone whose Onboarding tab already holds tasks so nobody gets the same lists twice.
- 02
Pick the lists from Settings
list_task_lists shows the lists you set up under Onboarding settings. The agent matches them to the names in your prompt and stops to ask if a list does not exist, instead of importing the wrong one.
- 03
Import like the modal does
add_task_lists imports the chosen lists for the employee. It follows BambooHR's own default, so tasks whose filters include the employee are the ones imported, and the agent reports tasks that were filtered out.
- 04
Check owners and dates
list_onboarding_tasks reads the result back. Tasks with no assignee, or a due date before the hire date, are listed for you rather than guessed.
- 05
Ask before notifying people
Importing can notify assignees, so each add_task_lists call waits for your OK by default. Switch confirmation off for the tool when you trust the lists.
What you get back
Hire dates in the next 7 days: 2
Added to Ana Kowal (starts 19 Oct): IT setup 4 tasks, Manager tasks 3 tasks
Added to Tom Becker (starts 21 Oct): IT setup 4 tasks, Manager tasks 3 tasks
No assignee on 1 task: "Order laptop" (Ana Kowal)
Skipped 0 employees that already had tasks Other ways to ask
- Every Friday, add the Sales onboarding list to everyone starting next week in the Sales department.
- Show me the onboarding tasks that are due this week and still open for people hired this month.
- Preview which tasks would be imported for Tom Becker and import nothing.
- Move every task assigned to the old IT lead to Priya Shah for employees who have not started yet.
What BambooHR allows, and what to know first
- BambooHR shows the Add Task List(s) button on the Onboarding tab, in the New Hire Packet and on the Offboarding tab, and the same window lists every list and task from Settings.
- BambooHR preselects tasks whose filters include the employee, so the filters you set in Settings decide which tasks a given hire gets.
- BambooHR puts every task without a list into a Miscellaneous Tasks list whose title cannot be edited or deleted, though its tasks can.
- BambooHR lets an admin choose per task when assignees are notified: 15 minutes after assignment, on the due date or a day before it.
- BambooHR's task alerts carry the new hire's job title, office location and hire date, and some tasks are due weeks or months after the hire date.
add_task_lists asks for your OK by default. To run it daily without you, switch confirmation off for that tool in your dashboard.

Frequently asked questions
Does my agent change the task lists in Settings?
No. It only reads the lists and imports them to one employee, the same as Add Task List(s) on the profile. Editing the lists themselves stays with you in the Onboarding settings.
Is it safe to connect BambooHR to Cotlet?
Yes. You sign in to BambooHR yourself, in your own Cloud Browser in the EU, and we never save your password. Your agents only get BambooHR once you enable it, every background request is listed, and the browser profile is stored encrypted with AES-256-GCM, the cipher 1Password uses for its vaults. The AI model never sees a login, posts and messages wait for your OK, and Disable for agents cuts access in one click. Independent scanners grade cotlet.dev A+ on Qualys SSL Labs, securityheaders.com and Mozilla Observatory; live results are on https://cotlet.dev/security.
