Campaign Monitor automation · runs weekly
Turn Campaign Monitor journeys on and off with an AI agent
A promo ends, a product sells out or a link in the Welcome series breaks, and the journey keeps emailing new subscribers until someone opens the journey designer and flips the switch.
Cotlet does it in your own Campaign Monitor account with list_journeys, get_journey and set_journey_status, called by your AI agent, an n8n workflow or a script.

Can Campaign Monitor do this on its own?
Campaign Monitor gives each journey an on and off switch in the designer. Its API can list journeys, read their stats, copy a journey and publish an event that starts a Subscriber Activity journey, but it has no call to create, edit, turn on or turn off a journey (checked 22 Oct 2026). A script on the API cannot pause one.
How you do it in Campaign Monitor today
- Click Automation and open the journey. The switch is at the top right of the journey designer, and the automation permission is required.
- Before the first start the control is a Turn on journey button, which stays disabled until every step is complete. The designer points out the unfinished steps.
- To turn a journey on you must be on a monthly billing plan. After the first start the button becomes a switch for on and off.
- The left panel shows Emails sent, Unique subscribers, Avg open rate, Avg click rate, Avg unsubscribe rate, Avg bounce rate and Subscribers waiting. View full report opens the detail.
- Each journey has its own switch, so pausing three journeys takes three visits to the designer.
How to turn Campaign Monitor journeys on and off with an AI agent
Turn off the Welcome series journey, tell me how many people are waiting in it, and turn it back on when I say so. - 01
Find the journey
list_journeys returns each journey with its status as Automation shows it. The agent matches the name from your prompt and asks you when two journeys fit.
- 02
Count who is inside
get_journey reads Subscribers waiting and the stats of each email step before anything changes. The agent reports the count, because people already in a paused journey keep moving but get no emails.
- 03
Check it can be switched
For a turn on, the journey needs all steps complete and a monthly billing plan. If the switch is disabled, set_journey_status returns the app's message with the unfinished steps and does not retry.
- 04
Flip the switch
set_journey_status with state off or on moves the switch in the designer. It waits for your OK by default, since turning a journey on starts emails to subscribers.
- 05
Read it back
get_journey runs again and the agent confirms the new status, so you see paused or active in the answer, not a promise that it worked.
What you get back
Welcome series: turned off
Status: paused (was active)
Subscribers waiting: 214, they keep moving but get no emails while it is off
Emails sent so far: 3,980, avg open rate 52.4%
New subscribers will not enter until you turn it on Other ways to ask
- Turn off every journey that is triggered by a date until I say otherwise, and list them.
- Each Friday list the journeys that are off and how many subscribers wait in each.
- Turn on the Welcome series only if all its steps are complete, and tell me which step is not.
What Campaign Monitor allows, and what to know first
- While a journey is off you can add or edit its steps, and new subscribers cannot trigger it.
- People already in a paused journey keep moving on their original timing, but it sends them no emails and does not update their custom fields.
- Journeys triggered by a segment check for segment updates every 10 minutes, so a new one needs about 10 minutes before a test.
- A declined card pauses journeys unless email credits are left, and Campaign Monitor restarts them after the payment details are updated.
- For a date-triggered journey, turning it back on after the date field changed can move people forward, backward or out of it, and anyone waiting at a Wait until step is removed.
set_journey_status asks for your OK by default. To run it weekly without you, switch confirmation off for that tool in your dashboard.
