Answer Patreon direct messages from members
Members write to you in Chats: where is the file, why was I charged, can I switch tiers. After a message to a whole tier the answers come back as dozens of separate threads, and the two real questions sit between the thank-yous.
Cotlet does it in your own Patreon account with list_chats, list_members and send_message, called by your AI agent, an n8n workflow or a script.

Can Patreon do this on its own?
Patreon direct messages live only in Chats on the web and in the Patreon app (checked 12 Oct 2026). API v2 has no endpoint to read or send messages, and Zapier has no Patreon actions. We found no saved replies or auto-reply for direct messages in Patreon's help center; the only message Patreon sends for you is the Welcome note when someone joins.
By hand
How you do it in Patreon today
- Click Chats in the Patreon left navigation and stay on the Your Patreon tab, where direct messages from your members arrive.
- Open each thread from the left panel; Patreon shows the member's membership length, current membership amount and lifetime paid next to the conversation.
- For a billing question, switch to Creator studio > Audience, search the member by name or email and click See all payment history in the side drawer.
- Type the reply and press Enter or click Send, then go back to the list for the next thread.
- Reading every thread, then checking billing in a second screen, repeats for each question, and a real question buried among replies to a bulk message is easy to miss for days.
With an agent
How to answer Patreon direct messages from members
Prompt
Show me Patreon messages I have not answered, draft replies to the questions about files, and leave billing questions for me. - 01
Pull only threads waiting on you
list_chats with unanswered_only drops threads where you had the last word. Replies that are only thanks or an emoji are grouped and left alone unless you ask otherwise.
- 02
Sort by what the member needs
Each remaining thread goes into a group: where to find content, billing, tier change, or something only you can answer. For billing the agent first reads the member's status with list_members and never answers from a template.
- 03
Answer from your own material
For "where is the file" the agent points to the post or collection you named in its instructions. When it does not know where something is, the thread goes on your list rather than getting a guessed link.
- 04
Draft, show, then send
Drafts come to you in one batch. send_message sends the approved ones, one member each, and a draft you edit is sent with your wording.
- 05
Hand back the rest
Refund requests, complaints and personal requests are summarized with the member's tier and join date and left unsent, so you answer them yourself.
What you get back
Example data
Unanswered threads: 9, oldest from Sat 10 Oct.
Sent after your OK: 4 "where is the file" replies pointing to the Q3 collection, 1 answer on switching to Gold.
Billing, left for you: Leo Marsh says he was charged twice; status active, Gold since March 2026.
Personal, left for you: Ana Lima asks for a commission quote.
Thanks only: 3 replies to Friday's tier message, no answer needed. Other ways to ask
- Every morning at 9:00, list unanswered Patreon messages and draft replies, but send nothing until I check them.
- Answer every unanswered question about the October files with the link to the October collection.
- Show me unanswered Patreon messages from Gold members only, oldest first.
Before you automate it
What Patreon allows, and what to know first
- Patreon members can start a direct message only after one processed payment or while they hold an active membership, so every thread in your inbox comes from someone who has paid you at least once.
- Patreon shows membership length, current membership amount and lifetime paid inside each direct message thread, which tells a long-time Gold member from a first-week one at a glance.
- Patreon keeps direct messages apart from community chats, which are group spaces of up to 10 per creator where a reply reaches everyone with access to that chat.
- Patreon messages sent before January 2019 were not moved to its current messaging system, so long-standing members' threads start at that date.
send_message asks for your OK by default. To run it daily without you, switch confirmation off for that tool in your dashboard.
