Send Udemy educational announcements and promotional emails
A new lecture or a new course means writing to students, and Udemy splits that into two kinds of message: an educational announcement for a course's own students, and a promotional email that sells your other courses.
Cotlet does it in your own Udemy account with list_courses, list_coupons and send_announcement, called by your AI agent, an n8n workflow or a script.

Can Udemy do this on its own?
Udemy's Instructor API cannot send educational announcements or promotional emails (reference checked 12 Oct 2026); it covers courses, reviews, Q&A and direct messages. Messages are written under Communication > Announcements, where you can save drafts and preview them. We found no scheduled send in Udemy's help center, and the monthly caps per course are yours to track.
By hand
How you do it in Udemy today
- Open the Udemy course management page, select Communication on the left, click Announcements and then Compose at the top right.
- Choose educational announcement or promotional email, select the eligible courses and learners, and write the message in Udemy's editor, because text pasted from Word or Google Docs can break the formatting.
- Click Preview above the subject line to see the message as it appears in the course and in the email, then click Send.
- Check the results later under Communications on the course management page: the Promotional Emails tab shows open rate, unique click-through rate and unsubscribe rate.
- Keep your own tally per course: Udemy allows 4 educational announcements and 2 promotional emails per course each month, and a link in the wrong kind of message triggers a warning that stops the send.

How to send Udemy educational announcements and promotional emails
Prompt
I just published a lecture on React Server Components. Send an educational announcement to students of my React course, and draft a promotional email to students of my JavaScript course offering the React course with this month's coupon. - 01
Pick the right kind of message
A new lecture, a free resource or a course update goes out as educational. Anything that sells another of your courses or carries a coupon goes out as promotional. A message that mixes both is split in two rather than sent as a promotion inside an educational announcement.
- 02
Check each course can receive it
list_courses shows which courses are paid, and a promotional email to a free course is not allowed, so those courses are dropped and named. The agent counts what it sent through Cotlet this month and warns before a fifth educational announcement or a third promotional email; messages you sent by hand are not in that count, so it asks when unsure.
- 03
Clean the text for Udemy's filters
Promotional emails lose every external link, including YouTube and your own site. Educational announcements lose links to Udemy courses and any coupon. The agent puts a space after every period, because Udemy's editor can read "deal. My" as a link, and removes emojis, which cause delivery errors.
- 04
Attach the coupon with its terms
For a promotional email the agent takes an active code from list_coupons and writes its expiry and redemption limit next to the link. When the course has no active coupon, it sends the referral link or asks you first.
- 05
Send after your OK
send_announcement goes out one course at a time after you approve the subject and body, since the email reaches every student you selected.
What you get back
Example data
Educational announcement sent to React in Practice: "New lecture: Server Components". 3 of 4 educational announcements left this month.
Promotional email drafted for JavaScript Basics: React in Practice with coupon REACT-OCT ($12.99, expires 1 Nov). Waiting for your OK.
Removed from the promotional email: a YouTube link, not allowed there.
HTML Starter: skipped, free course, promotional emails not allowed. Other ways to ask
- Send one educational announcement to all my Python courses about the Python 3.13 changes in section 2.
- Write a promotional email for my Excel students about my new Power BI course and show it to me before anything is sent.
- Before sending anything, tell me which of my paid courses still have promotional emails left this month, based on what you sent.
Before you automate it
What Udemy allows, and what to know first
- To send Udemy announcements or promotional emails for a course, the instructor must be listed as visible and have the manage permission; otherwise the Compose button stays inactive.
- Udemy promotional emails can go only to students of paid courses, and a published course switched from free to paid twice loses the ability to send them.
- A Udemy educational announcement is emailed and also posted in the Announcement section of the course, so its Educational Announcements tab counts unique views inside the course next to open rate and unsubscribe rate.
- Udemy educational announcements may link to free outside resources that do not ask students for personal information, but not to paid content, affiliate links or other Udemy courses.
send_announcement asks for your OK by default. To run it on a schedule without you, switch confirmation off for that tool in your dashboard.
