Wanderlog automation · runs daily
Track and split Wanderlog trip expenses with AI
On a group trip, receipts collect in a pocket or a camera roll, and somebody types each one into the Wanderlog "$" tab at night: amount, currency, category and who shares it. Skip two evenings and the balance no longer matches what anyone remembers.
Cotlet does it in your own Wanderlog account with list_trips, list_expenses and add_expense, called by your AI agent, an n8n workflow or a script.

Can Wanderlog do this on its own?
Wanderlog has no public API for expenses or budgets (checked 12 Oct 2026). The app covers the bookkeeping itself: a budget, expenses in any currency with totals in your home currency, categories, a breakdown by category and day, and a record of who paid and who owes whom, editable offline in the mobile app. The gap is entry. Every expense is typed into the "$" tab by hand, and nothing outside Wanderlog, such as receipt photos your agent can read or a card statement, can add one.
By hand
How you do it in Wanderlog today
- Open the trip plan and go to the "$" tab in the Wanderlog app, or the "$" section of the trip on the website.
- Click "Set a budget" once, so Wanderlog can show how close the estimated cost is getting to it.
- Click "Add expense" for every bill, enter the amount in the currency you paid, pick a category and choose the tripmates who share it; a Wanderlog expense can also be tied to a place, an activity or a reservation in the plan.
- Check the Wanderlog breakdown by category and day and the record of who owes whom before the group settles up at the end of the trip.
- Each receipt is its own form on a phone, often entered a day after it was paid, and a missing or doubled entry only shows up when someone questions the balance.

How to track and split Wanderlog trip expenses with AI
Prompt
Log today's receipts in the Portugal trip, split the dinners with Maya and Tom, and tell me where we stand against our 2,000 EUR budget. - 01
Read the trip before writing
The agent takes the tripmates from list_trips and the expenses already logged from list_expenses. Names in your message are matched to tripmate IDs. A name that is not on the trip stops the run with a question, because split_with only accepts people who are part of this trip.
- 02
Turn each receipt into one expense
From a receipt photo or a line you typed, the agent takes the total, the currency printed on it and the day it was paid, not the day you sent it. A bill paid partly in cash and partly by card stays one expense with the full total.
- 03
Skip what is already there
Each new entry is compared by amount, currency and date with the expenses already on the trip. A hotel or flight cost that already appears is reported as a likely duplicate and left out, so the budget is not counted twice.
- 04
Keep the categories the group already uses
The agent reuses the categories present on the trip, so dinner does not end up split across food, dinner and restaurants. A receipt it cannot place, such as a pharmacy bill, goes under the closest existing category and is named in the report for you to check.
- 05
Show the batch, then write with your OK
Before anything is written, the agent lists the day's receipts with amount, category and split. add_expense then asks for your OK on each call, because a split changes what tripmates owe; you can switch that off for nightly runs.
- 06
Report against the budget
After writing, list_expenses gives totals by category in the trip's home currency. The agent compares them with the budget you named and points at the category growing fastest.
What you get back
Example data
Portugal 2027, 13 May: 5 receipts read, 4 added after your OK.
Dinner at Cervejaria Ramiro, 86.40 EUR, food, split with Maya Novak and Tom Reyes.
Train Lisbon to Sintra, 13.20 EUR, transport, not split.

Spent so far: 1,284 EUR of your 2,000 EUR budget. Food is the largest category at 527 EUR. Other ways to ask
- Every evening at 22:00 during the Portugal trip, log the receipts I send you that day and give me the day total.
- Here is my card statement for May 12 to 19. Add every charge that is not already on the Portugal trip, in the currency it was charged.
- Show spending by category for the Portugal trip and tell me which day cost the most.
- Log 64 EUR for dinner tonight and split it evenly with everyone on the trip.
Before you automate it
What Wanderlog allows, and what to know first
- Wanderlog lets you enter an expense in the foreign currency you spent and shows the trip total in your home currency.
- The Wanderlog "$" tab sorts each expense under the category picked when it is entered and charts spending per category and per day.
- The Wanderlog app keeps a record of who paid for what and how much everyone owes, and tripmates settle the debts between them inside the app.
- A Wanderlog expense can belong to a place, an activity or a reservation in the trip plan, and all of them count toward the budget set with "Set a budget".
- The Wanderlog mobile app lets you view and edit expenses without a connection.
add_expense asks for your OK by default. To run it daily without you, switch confirmation off for that tool in your dashboard.
