Top up an Airalo eSIM automatically when data runs low

Airalo pings you at 25% and again at 10% data left, wherever you happen to be. Then you open My eSIMs, tap Top up and pick a package on the last few megabytes you have.

Cotlet does it in your own Airalo account with list_esims, get_data_usage, list_topup_packages, get_airmoney and top_up_esim, called by your AI agent, an n8n workflow or a script.

Official options

Can Airalo do this on its own?

Airalo has no API for a personal account (checked 12 Oct 2026). The Partner API can top up eSIMs that a reseller sold, not the ones in your own My eSIMs. Inside the app, Airalo offers low data notifications at 25% and 10% and, for some packages, Renewals, which rebuy the same package at 10% left with a saved card. Renewals cannot pick a smaller top-up, cannot spend Airmoney, and do not exist on every package, so for those cases the top-up is still a manual tap.

By hand

How you do it in Airalo today

  1. Open the Airalo app and go to My eSIMs to see data usage on the eSIM; on an iPhone, Airalo's widgets (iOS only) show the same for most packages.
  2. Before the trip, check the package's Additional information tab in the Airalo store: only eSIMs marked rechargeable can take a top-up later.
  3. In My eSIMs, tap Top up on that eSIM and choose a top-up package; at checkout, Apply Code/Use Airmoney spends your Airmoney balance, alone or next to another payment method.
  4. If the Airalo Top up button is missing, the eSIM is non-rechargeable or its network carrier has changed, and the only way back online is a new eSIM.
  5. The same check repeats every day of the trip, and the 10% warning tends to arrive when you have no Wi-Fi to finish a checkout on.

With an agent

How to top up an Airalo eSIM automatically when data runs low

Prompt

Every morning while I am in Thailand, check my Airalo eSIM. If less than 1 GB is left and the package is still valid for more than two days, add the smallest top-up and use my Airmoney first.
  1. 01

    Find the eSIM in use

The agent reads list_esims and picks the eSIM for the country you are in. With two eSIMs for the same destination, it takes the one whose usage is moving and asks you if both look idle.

  2. 02

Decide whether a top-up is worth it today

get_data_usage gives remaining data and expiry. The agent tops up only when data is under your threshold and the package still has days left; with less than a day of validity it reports instead, because Airalo cannot extend validity and a fresh package may fit better. When Airalo shows no data bar (usage_available false), it stops and says so rather than guessing.

  3. 03

Pick the package against your rule

list_topup_packages returns what Airalo offers for this eSIM. The agent takes the smallest one by default, or the cheapest per GB if you asked for that. An empty list means the eSIM cannot be recharged, and the agent suggests a new eSIM from search_packages instead of retrying.

  4. 04

Spend Airmoney where Airalo allows it

get_airmoney shows the balance. The agent applies it only when applies_at_checkout is true, since Airalo refuses balances under 1 USD, and never applies more than the package price.

  5. 05

Buy with your OK, then hand over checkout

top_up_esim waits for your confirmation unless you switched that off. When Airalo wants card payment or 3-D Secure, the agent sends you the checkout link and checks the data bar again after you finish.

What you get back

Example data

Thailand eSIM (es_48213): 0.8 GB of 5 GB left, valid until 2 Nov 2026.
Below your 1 GB threshold, 21 days of validity left.
Smallest top-up: Thailand 1 GB, 7 days, 2.50 USD.
Airmoney 4.30 USD available; 2.50 USD applied, nothing due.
Top-up bought after your OK, order 2026101112399.
Japan eSIM (es_47790): not rechargeable, no action.

Other ways to ask

  • Only tell me when my Airalo data drops under 20%; do not buy anything.
  • If my Europe eSIM runs low this week, buy the 3 GB top-up and charge the card, not Airmoney.
  • Check all my eSIMs tonight and list which ones could still be topped up if I need data later.
  • Each morning at 8:00, report data left and days left on the eSIM I am using.

Before you automate it

What Airalo allows, and what to know first

  • Airalo sends low data notifications when an eSIM reaches 25% and 10% data remaining, so a threshold of your own only adds value above or between those two points.
  • Airalo's data allowance covers the whole validity period, not a daily amount: a 1 GB, 7-day package can be used up on day one.
  • Airalo cannot extend the validity period of a package; a top-up adds a package to the eSIM rather than more days to the old one.
  • Airalo says most eSIMs can be topped up after the data runs out or the first package expires, as long as the eSIM is rechargeable and the carrier has not changed.
  • Airalo Airmoney can pay part of a top-up, but a balance under 1.00 USD cannot be applied at checkout, and Airmoney cannot pay for Renewals.

top_up_esim asks for your OK by default. To run it daily without you, switch confirmation off for that tool in your dashboard.

Frequently asked questions

What if the top-up is bought but the phone still has no data?

Airalo's troubleshooting article says to follow the Access Data steps under My eSIMs > your eSIM > View details, then turn airplane mode on, restart the phone and turn airplane mode off. If that fails, Airalo support is available 24/7 in the app.
