Clone a ThriveCart product for a new cohort

Before every cohort or relaunch you start from last round's product in the Products list: copy it, rename it, fix the dates in the name and description, then retire the old one so nobody buys the spring offer in October.

Cotlet does it in your own ThriveCart account with list_products, get_product, clone_product, list_coupons, update_coupon and set_product_status, called by your AI agent, an n8n workflow or a script.

Official options

Can ThriveCart do this on its own?

ThriveCart's API reads products but cannot create, clone, edit or archive them (checked 12 Oct 2026). Cloning is the copy button on the Products page and archiving is the Archive Product icon, both by hand. Pro+ accounts with Stripe Connect+ can add a Smart Link under Products > Smart Links that forwards the old checkout URL to the new product; it handles old links but does not clone anything or move coupons.

By hand

How you do it in ThriveCart today

  1. Open Products in the ThriveCart top menu, hover over last round's product and click the copy button, then confirm the clone; the button is greyed out for sub-users.
  2. Open the copy and edit the Product Options tab: Product Name (shown publicly on the product page and the invoice), the URL (40 characters at most), Labels and Product Tags, and the Disabled, Test or Live status.
  3. Run a test purchase in Test status, then switch the copy to Live.
  4. Go back to Products, click the Archive Product icon on the old product and confirm, so its checkout is disabled and it leaves the Active Products filter.
  5. Open Products > Coupons and tick the new product on every coupon that should still work. Coupons, affiliate approvals and links in old emails were set up for the old product, and each one is a separate place to check.

How to clone a ThriveCart product for a new cohort

Prompt

Clone my Spring Workshop product in ThriveCart for the autumn cohort, add the copy to the coupons and tell me what else needs changing, then archive the spring product once I confirm.
  1. 01

    Pick the right source product

list_products is searched by name across all statuses, archived included, because last year's cohort is often already archived and ThriveCart can clone archived products. With two matches (Spring Workshop and Spring Workshop VIP) the agent asks which one to copy.

  2. 02

Clone and name it for the new round

clone_product creates the copy with the name you gave. The agent then reads both products with get_product and compares pricing options and bumps, so the report says exactly what the copy holds before anyone edits it.

  3. 03

    Carry the coupons over

list_coupons shows which enabled coupons list the old product ID. The agent proposes adding the new ID to each one with update_coupon and skips coupons that have already ended or reached their use cap.

  4. 04

    List what it cannot change

Dates inside the checkout copy, the product URL, the payment processor and affiliate approvals for the new product are not covered by Cotlet tools. The agent lists them as a short to-do for you in ThriveCart, with a note that the copy should go through a test order before it is switched live.

  5. 05

    Archive the old product last

Only after you confirm the new checkout works does the agent call set_product_status with archived on the old product. If list_products and get_product show the old product still sells a subscription, the agent names it before archiving, so you can decide about existing subscribers first.

What you get back

Example data

Cloned Spring Workshop (15) as Autumn Workshop 2026 (27).
Copy holds 2 pricing options (One-time $297, 3 payments of $109) and 1 bump (Workbook, $19).
Coupons updated after your OK: EARLYBIRD and ALUMNI20 now include product 27. SPRING20 skipped, it ended on 30 Apr.
To do in ThriveCart: change the dates in the checkout headline, set the URL to autumn-workshop, run a test order, approve affiliates for product 27.
Spring Workshop (15) archived after your OK. It had 11 subscriptions, flagged to you before archiving.

Other ways to ask

  • Clone the archived 2025 Masterclass for this year's launch and keep it in Test until I say go.
  • Make a copy of the Landing Page Course called Landing Page Course, agency edition, and leave the original live.
  • The autumn cohort is sold out: set Autumn Workshop 2026 to disabled, not archived, so I can reopen it.

Before you automate it

What ThriveCart allows, and what to know first

  • Only the ThriveCart account owner can clone or create products; for sub-users the copy and Create Product buttons are greyed out.
  • An archived ThriveCart product has its checkout disabled and leaves the Active Products filter, while its stats and transactions stay in the dashboard and reports and it can be restored, cloned or deleted from the Archived Products filter.
  • ThriveCart products have three working statuses: Disabled hides the product and blocks sales, Test allows test purchases that still fire rules and webhooks, and Live is public.
  • ThriveCart Smart Links (Pro+ with Stripe Connect+) forward an old product URL to a master checkout and keep coupon, affiliate and UTM parameters, but a product can belong to only one active Smart Link and an archived product cannot be the master.
  • ThriveCart pays an affiliate on a product only if the affiliate is approved for that product, so a cloned product needs its own approvals or an affiliate rule that adds approved affiliates to it.

update_coupon and set_product_status ask for your OK by default. To run it on a schedule without you, switch confirmation off for those tools in your dashboard.

Frequently asked questions

Should the old product be disabled or archived?

Both stop sales. A disabled ThriveCart product stays in the main Products view, which suits an offer you will reopen; an archived product leaves the active product filters and is restored from the Archived Products filter.
