ThriveCart automation · runs weekly

Create ThriveCart coupons for a sale and retire old ones

A launch or a Black Friday week means another coupon in Products > Coupons, set up field by field, while last season's codes with no end date keep working on the same checkout. Bumps added since the last sale are the part people forget to tick.

Cotlet does it in your own ThriveCart account with list_products, get_product, list_coupons, create_coupon and update_coupon, called by your AI agent, an n8n workflow or a script.

Official options

Can ThriveCart do this on its own?

ThriveCart's API has no coupon endpoints: "Create & manage coupons" is listed in the developer docs as a future addition, not an available endpoint (checked 12 Oct 2026). Coupons are created, edited and disabled only in Products > Coupons. Pro+ accounts with Stripe Connect+ get Coupon Reporting with Top Coupons and By Coupon views, which shows orders, revenue and refund rate per code but does not create or switch off coupons.

By hand

How you do it in ThriveCart today

  1. Open Products > Coupons in the ThriveCart dashboard and create a coupon: Coupon Name for yourself, Coupon Code for buyers, Coupon Status, Discount Type and Discount.
  2. For a percentage coupon, pick Applies To (Entire funnel, Main product, Bumps only or Main product + bump) and decide whether the Recurring/future payments box applies the discount to rebills too.
  3. Set The Coupon Is Redeemable and The Coupon Is Redeemable Until dates, and Disable After A Fixed Number Of Uses if the offer is capped.
  4. Tick the products in the product list; ThriveCart shows pricing options and bumps indented under each product, and bumps created after the coupon are never added on their own.
  5. Go back through the Coupons overview to find older codes on the same product and switch their Coupon Status to disabled one by one. A code saved without a Redeemable Until date stays enabled until someone turns it off, so an old 50% code can still work next to the new sale.

How to create ThriveCart coupons for a sale and retire old ones

Prompt

Set up a BLACKFRIDAY coupon in ThriveCart: 30% off the Landing Page Course and its bumps, 27 Nov to 1 Dec, first 100 uses. Check the code is free and disable any old sale codes on that product that have no end date.
  1. 01

Read the funnel before choosing Applies To

get_product returns the bumps, upsells and downsells of the product. If the user wants the bumps discounted, the agent picks main_and_bumps and lists every bump ID in product_ids, because a bump left out is charged full price. If the user asks for an upsell discount, the agent explains that ThriveCart coupons cannot target single upsells and proposes the Entire funnel option instead.

  2. 02

Make sure the code is free and valid

list_coupons is searched for the code first. An existing BLACKFRIDAY from last year is not reused silently: the agent asks whether to edit that coupon's dates or pick a new code such as BLACKFRIDAY26. Codes with spaces, dashes or fewer than 3 characters are rewritten before anything is saved.

  3. 03

Guard against charges below the processor minimum

For a fixed discount the agent compares the amount with the cheapest pricing option. A coupon that would leave a 0.30 charge is flagged, and the agent suggests 100% or a smaller discount, since a charge under the processor minimum can block the order.

  4. 04

Create the coupon, with your OK

create_coupon is called once with the dates, the use cap and the product list. The agent states that the cap counts every buyer together and that ThriveCart has no per-customer limit, so a shared code can be used up by a few large orders.

  5. 05

    Retire overlapping codes

Older enabled coupons on the same product with no end date, or with a deeper discount than the new one, are listed for you. After your OK each one gets update_coupon with status disabled, which keeps its history. Codes that still have an end date in the future are left alone and only named in the report.

What you get back

Example data

Created BLACKFRIDAY26 (coupon 87): 30% on Landing Page Course main product and bumps Template pack and Swipe file vault, 27 Nov to 1 Dec 2026, 100 uses in total.
Code BLACKFRIDAY was taken by last year's coupon 54 (disabled), so the new code ends in 26.
Coupon URL: https://youracc.thrivecart.com/landing-page-course/?coupon=BLACKFRIDAY26
Disabled after your OK: SPRING20 (14 uses, no end date) and VIP50 (3 uses, no end date).
Left enabled: PARTNER15, linked to affiliate Jo Partner, ends 31 Dec.

Other ways to ask

  • Create LAUNCH25, 25% off the first payment only of the Membership monthly plan, valid this Friday to Sunday.
  • Give Jo Partner a code JO10 for 10% off the Landing Page Course that credits her as the affiliate on every use.
  • Every Monday, list enabled ThriveCart coupons with no end date and their use counts, and ask me which to disable.
  • Add the new Notion templates bump to every enabled coupon on the Landing Page Course.

Before you automate it

What ThriveCart allows, and what to know first

  • ThriveCart coupon codes need at least 3 characters and accept letters and digits only, so BLACK-FRIDAY or "BF 30" will not save.
  • A ThriveCart fixed amount coupon discounts only the initial purchase of the main product; rebills are discounted only by a percentage coupon with Recurring/future payments ticked.
  • ThriveCart coupons cannot be applied to individual upsells or downsells, and receipts show one total discount with the code rather than a discount per product.
  • A coupon with an end date stops at 11:59:59 pm that day in the ThriveCart account time zone, and a future start date begins at 00:01.
  • Bump-specific ThriveCart coupons need a percentage discount, a Pro+ license and Stripe Connect+ enabled on the product.

create_coupon and update_coupon ask for your OK by default. To run it weekly without you, switch confirmation off for those tools in your dashboard.

Frequently asked questions

Can the coupon be applied without the buyer typing it?

Yes. ThriveCart applies a coupon from the checkout URL with ?coupon=CODE, and the Copy URL button in the Coupons area builds that link for a chosen product. The agent includes the link in its report so you can paste it into an email or button.

Can one buyer be limited to a single use?

No. ThriveCart's Disable After A Fixed Number Of Uses counts all buyers together, and the help center states that per-customer limits are not supported.
