ThriveCart automation · runs weekly
Review overdue and paused ThriveCart subscriptions
Failed rebills arrive as notification emails one at a time, and the processor keeps retrying in the background. Once a week you open the Subscriptions dashboard, filter by Overdue and decide who gets a nudge, a pause or a cancellation.
Cotlet does it in your own ThriveCart account with list_subscriptions, list_transactions, pause_subscription and cancel_subscription, called by your AI agent, an n8n workflow or a script.

Can ThriveCart do this on its own?
ThriveCart's API looks up subscriptions one customer at a time by email and has no list of overdue subscriptions (checked 12 Oct 2026). Natively, the Subscriptions dashboard filters by Overdue, and Pro and Pro+ accounts can turn on dunning emails under Settings > Manage dunning, up to 3 reminders before and 3 after a due date. Dunning reminds the customer; it does not decide to pause or cancel anything, and ThriveCart keeps no send log of dunning emails in the dashboard.
By hand
How you do it in ThriveCart today
- Open the Subscriptions dashboard in ThriveCart, set the status filter to Overdue and narrow it by product or time period; the dashboard shows the count, monthly recurring revenue and yearly revenue of the filter.
- Hover over each status to see when the subscription started and how many payments went through, then pick View to open the customer profile with failed payments, refunds and pauses in color.
- Check the retry state in Stripe or PayPal, since the payment processor, not ThriveCart, retries the card.
- Hover over Manage to pause or cancel the subscriptions you give up on, then switch the filter to Paused to see which ones resume soon.
- Click Download CSV to keep a record. The same customers show up week after week, and nothing in ThriveCart lists which overdue subscriptions you already looked at.
With an agent
How to review overdue and paused ThriveCart subscriptions
Prompt
Every Monday, list my overdue ThriveCart subscriptions with how long each has been overdue and how much MRR is at risk, check which paused ones resume this month, and suggest what to do with each. - 01
Pull the overdue list with its MRR
list_subscriptions with status overdue gives the subscriptions and the MRR they represent. The agent sorts them by the date of the missed payment, so a subscription two days late is not treated like one that has failed for six weeks.
- 02
Read the payment history behind each one
list_transactions for the customer shows earlier rebills. A customer with a year of clean payments and one failure is marked as likely to recover once the card is updated; one whose last payment was months ago is marked as a churn candidate.
- 03
Respect the processor's retries
Stripe retries on the schedule set in your Stripe billing settings, and PayPal cancels after 5 failures in a row. The agent does not suggest cancelling while retries are still scheduled. It flags Authorize.net subscriptions separately, because those failures are not retried automatically.
- 04
Check the paused list for surprises
list_subscriptions with status paused shows resume dates. Subscriptions that resume within 7 days are listed, so you can warn the customer before the charge restarts.
- 05
Act only on your decision
The agent proposes one action per subscription: wait, pause until a date, or cancel. pause_subscription and cancel_subscription run only on the ones you approve. Each customer handled is noted in the report, so next week's run shows what is new.
What you get back
Example data
Overdue: 4 subscriptions, $243.00 MRR, $2,916.00 yearly revenue.
Sam Rivers, Membership $97/mo: 1 failed rebill on 8 Oct after 14 paid months, Stripe still retrying. Suggest: wait.
Dana Client, Landing Page Course $49/mo: overdue since 5 Sep, no payment in 5 weeks. Suggest: cancel.
Lee Ortiz, Coaching split-pay 2 of 4: overdue since 2 Oct on Authorize.net, needs a manual retry.
Paused: Mia Chen resumes 15 Oct, $49.00. Send her a heads-up.
Cancelled after your OK: Dana Client (sub_7731). Other ways to ask
- How much MRR is sitting in paused or overdue subscriptions on the Membership product right now?
- List subscriptions that are cancelled but still active this month, so I can send a win-back email before access ends.
- Pause Lee Ortiz's coaching plan for 2 billing periods instead of cancelling it.
Before you automate it
What ThriveCart allows, and what to know first
- ThriveCart creates subscriptions inside Stripe, PayPal or Authorize.net, and the processor runs the rebills and retries; ThriveCart records the result and fires rules and webhooks.
- Stripe Smart Retries attempt a failed payment up to eight times by default, PayPal retries every 5 days up to 3 times and cancels after 5 failures in a row, and Authorize.net does not retry at all.
- Pausing a ThriveCart subscription delays rebills without skipping them: a plan with 5 rebills is still charged 5 times, and a resume date already set can only be changed by ThriveCart support.
- When a Stripe subscription is paused after a failed rebill, ThriveCart also looks for and cancels the outstanding Stripe invoices.
- ThriveCart's Cancelled (still active) status marks customers who stopped renewals but keep access until the end of the paid period, the group to target for win-back emails.
pause_subscription and cancel_subscription ask for your OK by default. To run it weekly without you, switch confirmation off for those tools in your dashboard.

Frequently asked questions
Does ThriveCart email the customer when a payment fails?
Not by default. ThriveCart sends dunning reminders only when they are enabled under Settings > Manage dunning on Pro or Pro+, or when a product automation rule uses the When a payment is overdue trigger. Stripe and PayPal can also send their own failure emails.
