Skool automation · runs weekly

Send new Skool members a personal welcome DM

Skool's AutoDM greets every new member with the same template, so nothing in it can point a member to the lesson that fits the goal they gave when they joined.

Cotlet does it in your own Skool account with list_members, list_courses, list_conversations and send_message, called by your AI agent, an n8n workflow or a script.

Official options

Can Skool do this on its own?

Skool's AutoDM, a Pro-plan plugin, sends one fixed message 1 to 5 minutes after someone joins (checked 12 Oct 2026). Skool has no API and no Zapier action to send a direct message, so anything beyond the template is typed by hand in Skool Chat.

By hand

How you do it in Skool today

  1. On the Pro plan, an admin writes one AutoDM under Settings > Plugins > AutoDM, using #NAME# and #GROUPNAME# as the only variables, and toggles it on.
  2. For a personal note, the admin opens the Members tab, finds this week's new members and reads each profile to guess what they came for.
  3. The admin then opens a Skool Chat with each member and writes the message by hand, copying lesson links from the Classroom one at a time.
  4. In a busy week the personal notes are the first thing to slip, and AutoDM is no backup for people the admin already chatted with, because Skool skips them.

How to send new Skool members a personal welcome DM

Prompt

For everyone who joined yourgroup this week, send a short welcome DM in Skool Chat that links the first open lesson matching their goal. Skip anyone I already chat with.
  1. 01

    Find who is new

list_members runs with joined_since set to the start of the window and role set to member, so new moderators and admins are not welcomed like customers.

  2. 02

    Skip existing chats

list_conversations shows who you already talk to; anyone with an open conversation is skipped, because a second greeting after your own message reads like a bot.

  3. 03

    Pick the lesson

list_courses gives the Classroom with each course's access rule. The agent links only open courses, not level-locked or paid ones the member cannot open yet, and matches the lesson to what you told it about each goal.

  4. 04

    Write one message each

send_message goes out once per member, under your name, with their first name and the lesson link. Each DM waits for your OK until you switch confirmation off for send_message.

  5. 05

    Handle the replies

On the next run, the agent lists welcome replies that still have no answer from you, so the DM starts a conversation instead of ending one.

What you get back

Example data

New members this week: 12
Welcomed 9, e.g. Ana Lopez: "Start with Welcome in Start Here"
Skipped 2 (you already chat with them)
Skipped 1 (Skool Chat is off for this member)
Replies waiting for you from last week: 3

Other ways to ask

  • Answer my unread Skool Chat messages from members who joined this month and list the ones that need me.
  • Every day, welcome yesterday's new members and point anyone who mentioned ads to the Paid Traffic course.
  • Draft welcome DMs for this week's joins in a list I can edit, and send nothing.
  • Send members who joined 14 days ago and are still at level 1 a check-in message with the Start Here link.

Before you automate it

What Skool allows, and what to know first

  • Skool's AutoDM only supports the #NAME# and #GROUPNAME# variables, and only a group admin can be set as its sender.
  • Skool skips the AutoDM when a conversation with the new member already exists, so people you talked to before they joined never get the template at all.
  • Skool lets each member turn Skool Chat off for a group under Settings > Chat, so some new members are out of reach by DM and the agent lists them instead.
  • Skool shows admins every course as open, so a level-locked course link that works for you can still be closed to a new level 1 member.
  • Skool's Drip setting opens a lesson a set number of days after joining, so the first lesson in a welcome DM has to be one that is not dripped.

send_message asks for your OK by default. To run it weekly without you, switch confirmation off for that tool in your dashboard.
